MAYOR LEADS
ALASKA HIGHWAY LEGACY TOUR

City of Dawson Creek Mayor Wayne Dahlen will be leading the Alaska Highway 2004 Legacy Tour from Dawson Creek, British Columbia to Delta Junction and continue on to Fairbanks, Alaska between July 1 and July 12, 2004. The focus of the tour is to increase awareness about the Alaska Highway International Forum and to discuss the long-term preservation and sustainable economic development of this highway corridor.

The community visits will provide an opportunity to meet with political and First Nation leaders, stakeholders, and organizations in communities along the Alaska Highway who are interested in the future of the highway. The principal objective of the visits will be to meet with Mayor and council to discuss the planned signing of a Memorandum of Understanding at the Alaska Highway International Forum on September 29, 2004. It is planned that the signing of a MOU will solidify a long-term working relationship between all parties interested in the future of this important international highway.
“ We are pleased to welcome tour participants Mayor Fred Jarvis of the District of Taylor; Mayor John Farynowski of Haines Junction; Honourable Elaine Taylor, Minister of Tourism & Culture for the Yukon; and Honourable Ted Staffen, Speaker of the Yukon Legislative Assembly who will be joining us for part or all of the tour,” says Mayor Wayne Dahlen.

Hosted by the City of Dawson Creek, the Alaska Highway International Forum will provide political leaders, administrative officials and tourism stakeholders from British Columbia, Yukon, and Alaska with an opportunity to jointly explore and collaborate on issues regarding the maintenance, infrastructure for tourism development, preservation of history, and marketing and promotion of the Alaska Highway.
The International Forum is scheduled to take place in Dawson Creek, September 29, 2004 and will be held in conjunction with the Northern Tourism Expo which is scheduled between September 30 and October 2, 2004. The “Expo” will be a prime networking opportunity for northern tourism operators and stakeholders. The annual general meetings of the Northern BC Tourism Association and the Northern Rockies Tourism Association will also be held as part of this event.

Special thank you to Fraserway RV Rentals for providing transportation for the Northern Rockies Alaska Highway Tourism Association on the tour and to the growing list of financial contributors to the Alaska Highway International Forum including: Peace River Regional District, Northern Rockies Regional District, Ministry of Small Business and Economic Development BC, Ministry of Transportation BC and the Yukon Ministry of Tourism & Culture.
