SHARE HIGHWAY VISIONS AT SCENIC BYWAYS WORKSHOP

The Alaska Highway Community Initiative recently hosted the successful Scenic Byway Training Workshop held June 28 – 29, 2005 in Fort St. John, BC. Tourism industry leaders, representatives from municipal, First Nations and senior levels of government from BC and Yukon attended the event. Historic roads and U.S Scenic Byways Program expert Dan Marriott traveled from Washington DC to facilitate the workshop. The purpose of the workshop was to learn best practice concepts from internationally recognized routes such as Route 66 and the Silk Road in China. The group also discussed how to adapt elements of the successful Scenic Byways program to interpret, enhance and conserve the Alaska Highway. The Scenic Byway Workshop was organized as part of Phase I of the Alaska Highway Community Initiative and was funded by the Western Economic Partnership Agreement. MORE…

On January 11, 2005, those representatives from the Alaska Highway communities who signed the historic Memorandum of Understanding following the Alaska Highway International Forum in September participated in a significant conference call. Dawson Creek, BC: One important outcome of the Alaska Highway International Forum was the adoption of the Memorandum of Understanding and signing of the Alaska Highway Community Initiative which commits thirteen Alaska Highway communities to begin to work together on matters of mutual importance regarding the future planning and development of the Alaska Highway. The communities have adopted the rallying cry that the “Alaska Highway is our Main Street” and have agreed to work cooperatively to ensure that the intrinsic qualities of the highway are not lost. MAYOR WELCOMES DELEGATES TO
ALASKA HIGHWAY INTERNATIONAL FORUM

Mayor Wayne Dahlen is playing host this week to the Alaska Highway International Forum. Earlier this summer Mayor Dahlen traveled up the Alaska Highway and met with community leaders about the upcoming conference. The event is expected to attract approximately 150 delegates from thirteen different Alaska Highway communities as well as senior government officials. The two-day event is the first time community leaders have met to discuss issues related to the long-term planning and development of the Alaska Highway corridor. The highway corridor crosses international, provincial, territorial, state, and municipal jurisdictions and travels through the cultural boundaries of many northern indigenous people. MORE…

MAYOR DAHLEN SPEAKS TO DELEGATES
AT RAIL CONFERENCE

Mayor Wayne Dahlen and Councilor Bud Powell traveled to Juneau, Alaska this week to attend a major rail conference and discuss with British Columbia, Yukon and Alaska officials, plans for constructing a rail-link between Alaska and Northern British Columbia. In his comments to delegates, Mayor Dahlen recognized the importance of the new CN-BC Rail partnership and what it will mean for northeastern British Columbia. The Mayor advised that “this new partnership will be great for northern B.C. by providing an east-west corridor for the shipment of grain to Prince Rupert. In addition, this new partnership will provide the shortest and fastest routes for moving northern resources to both southern U.S. and Mexican markets.” MORE…
